Guggul is found to be advised by Ayurvedic sages in
many ailments.
Following are its indications-
Guggul is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory agent
for the purpose of relief from pains, due to its ushan
virya (hot) potency therefore comprising with the properties
to bring about the suppression of the Vata the main
cause of pains.
It
has been very predominantly used in arthritic pains.
It also possesses the property by means of which it
brings about the reversal of the degenerative changes
in joint and bones. It even provides relief from the
pain and swelling. Due to this property it is also believed
that it provides strength to the nervous system. Hence
is widely used in diseases like rheumatoid arthritis,
gout, Osteoarthritis, sciatica, paralysis, hemiplegia,
lymphadenopathy etc.
Guggul is widely used in skin diseases because of its
blood purifying capabilty. It promotes the production
of red blood corpuscles (RBC) and improves the action
of white blood corpuscles (WBC), which are helpful in
fighting against any kind of infections and forming
our defence against the forien disease causing pathogens.
Guggul is also gives strength to our immune system.

· Guggul is regarded as ayurvedic antibiotic
and is used in infectious diseases with great results.
· Guggul finds its major application in problems
related to heart. Great results are found to be in people
who are having high cholesterol levels. Significant
lowering in blood cholesterol levels has been reported
by regular use of guggul. It helps in maintaining LDL
and HDL levels in blood in normal limits.
· Guggul has the properties, which are helpful
in hypertension. It also helps in lowering in blood
pressure levels and helps in maintaining it to normal
levels.
· A good result has also been seen in reducing
fat levels within the body. Because of the ushan virya

Guggul is also helpful in upper respiratory tract infection.
Its expectorant action helps in the suppression of the
kapha dosha, which is the main cause of wet cough. Benefits
are also seen in asthmatic conditions.
· It works as a diuretic for the patients suffering
from renal calculi by means of crushing the calculus
therefore relieving and treating the renal stones.
Gargles are when performed with guggul water i.e guggul
+ water then it provides relief in stomatitis, tonsillitis,
mouth ulcers, throat irritations,pharyngitis & upper
respiratory infections.
· The sexual ability and sperm count are improved
by the regular use of guggul, in addition the sperm
quality is also improved; Therefore it is said to be
Aphrodisiac.
· Guggul is further even beneficial within
menstrual disturbances and dysmonnerhoea or painful
menses.
· Guggul works as rasayan i.e. used in promoting
youthfulnesss and longitivity. For this reason is a
constituent of the Chawanprash.
In various ancient classical medical texts guggul
is prescribed for the treatment of medoroga, a disease
that closely resembles in symptoms to high cholesterol
and hardening of the arteries. Guggul gum lowers cholesterol
levels and protects against the hardening of the arteries.
In the Sushruta Samhita, guggul was also suggested for
fat loss and the relief of arthritis.
High cholesterol:About 14-27% of
LDL cholesterol and 22-30% of triglycerides levels were
reduced when guggul was given to men and women with
high cholesterol for 12 weeks with no change in diet
or exercise.
Impotence: Erectile dysfunction or
impotency is found to be most likely developed in Men
with lower blood cholesterol or higher amounts of the
beneficial high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.
Since guggul provides relief in atherosclerosis (hardening
of the arteries), which may impede blood flow to and
from the penis, guggul is possibly used for the treatment
for impotence in men .
Weight Loss: Guggul works to enhance
thyroid function. Since the thyroid gland produces hormones
that are needed for the regulation of metabolism, it
can help in weight loss. Guggul changes thyroid hormone
metabolism, increase levels of circulating T3, or triiodothyroxine,
a thyroxine metabolite known to raise overall metabolism,
which in turn increases burning of fat.
Other Conditions: Guggul increase
white blood cell production, disinfects mucus, sweat,
and urine and regulates menstruation.
Guggul is commercially available for the treatment
of cholesterol and triglyceride deposits in the body.
Even in Sushruta Samhita, guggul is used for the treatment
of obesity and rheumatism.
Properties:
Guggul is known to be having the following
properties:-
(i) The cholesterol that is accumulated in the body
is found to be disintegrated by Guggul. Hence it is
used for the treatment of various cardiovascular problems.
(ii) Guggul even flushes out toxins from the body and
promotes easy digestion of foods. It also has an mild
laxative effect.
(iii) It is known to be a mild liver stimulant.
(iv) The purification of blood is even brought about
by Guggul.
(v) Guggul even produces a beneficial effect on the
nervous system.
Uses
(i) In Cervical Spondylosis
Cervical spondylosis is a type of arthritis which affects
the cervical vertebrae, i.e. the vertebrae of the neck
region as it has been mentioned in arthiritis that the
ama is found to be accumulated. For the treatment of
this disease, guggul is the best remedy. It is used
in the form of its preparation Simhanada Guggul. The
dosage prescribed for the patients is two to four tablets
twice a day, followed by a glass of hot water or milk.
Due to its laxative effect, it also removes the ama,
i.e. the toxic buildup of waste materials in the body.
If the bowels move in a regular fashion, the pains of
spondylosis are very much reduced.
(ii) Constipation
Guggul acts as a mild laxative. It facilitates the
movement of the bowels and keeps the digestive system
clean.
(iii) Obesity
Guggul is used primarily for the treatment of obesity.
The gum resin of the guggul is used to make incense
sticks. These are lighted and the fumes are inhaled.
Guggul can also be given internally for obese people.
Triphala Guggul and Yograj Guggul are very effective
in the treatment of obesity along with the various other
preparations of Guggul.
(iv) Rheumatism
Yogaraj Guggul is extensively used for the treatment
of rheumatism. Two to four tablets twice a day is to
be taken. The dose must be followed by a hot glass of
water or milk.
(v) Sciatica
Guggul is very effective for treating problems related
with the nervous system. It is given to the patient
of sciatica in the form of Yogaraj Guggul,. The dosage
is two tablets four times a day along with warm milk
or water.
Special Ayurvedic Preparations
(i) Guggul Tiktaka ghrita
Guggul Tiktata ghrita is elaborately prepared by boiling
guggul in a special kind of butter.
(ii) Navaka Guggul
Navaka Guggul is a combination of gugguland various
beneficial herbs. It is used in weight loss.
(iii) Simhanada Guggul
Simhanada Guggul is a preparation with guggul with
the main ingredient which is used as treatment for cervical
spondylosis.
(iv) Triphala Guggul
Triphala Guggul is a compound extract (of triphala)
to which guggul is added.
(v) Yogaraja Guggul
Yogaraja Guggul is a very special preparation with
guggul as its main ingredient. It is a mixture of about
twenty powder extracts, within which guggul is the chief
ingredient. It is used as a carminative, for lowering
cholesterol and as an antipyretic.
Apart from these, there are many other preparations
of guggul being widely used such as Gokshuradi Guggul,
Salai Guggul, Amrutadi Guggul, Kaishora Guggul, Kanchanara
Guggul, Trayodashanga Guggul and Maha Yogaraja Guggul.
